Job Description

Senior PHP Developer

Fully remote working and the technical ownership of a live SaaS platform

Salary £50k to £60k plus excellent benefits

About the role

Our client a UK Enterprise Order Management Software company are looking for an experience software engineer with a background in PHP coding to start as a hands-on developer of their SaaS and growing into full technical ownership of the platform.

This is a long-term career role, not a stepping stone, and it's largely what you make of it.

Day to day, your role will involve working tickets, fixing issues and also building PHP software and developing a plan for how the system should evolve. Longer term you will head up reshaping parts of the application once you're established and the recruitment of additional developers.

For the short to medium term you'll be the sole technical hand on a mature, monolithic PHP application — but you won't be working in isolation. You'll be part of a collaborative team with daily meetings across different aspects of the business, all of which you'll contribute to

The value in this role isn't in typing code — it's in understanding what the business actually needs, deciding what should be built, directing AI tooling to build it, and being the person who can tell whether what came back is right.

Autonomy is one of the biggest things this role offers. There's no fixed timeline and no one looking over your shoulder — you'll take on responsibility as soon as you've shown you're ready for it.

We're looking for a mature, responsible decision-maker who works well with teams. You will be able to provide realistic, deliverable ideas about where the product should go; and a consistent track record of doing what you said you would.

What you'll do
  • Turn business problems into working software — often talking to the person with the problem, not to a ticket
  • Oversee day-to-day technical support and keep the application running reliably
  • Work tickets, fix bugs, and maintain a live SaaS product
  • Use AI tooling as your primary means of delivery, and own the correctness of what it produces
  • Develop a clear plan for the system's evolution and deliver against it
  • Improve and restructure parts of the application as you become established
  • Take on architectural and technical-direction responsibility as you demonstrate you're ready
What we're looking for
  • You read unfamiliar code quickly and can explain what a change will affect before it ships — the specific language matters less to us than this
  • Working familiarity with PHP or similar web development language
  • Genuine fluency with AI development tools — not curiosity about them, but a working practice you can show us
  • You understand a business requirement well enough to challenge it, and you'd rather ask the question than build the wrong thing
  • The judgement to make good decisions independently and own the outcomes
  • Realistic about what can be delivered, and reliable in delivering it
  • Works well with a small, close team and earns their trust
  • Wants a long-term career with one company
This is a fully remote role, and our client has a stable, mature product and business. Their employees value the culture, the environment, and being treated with respect.

You'll work directly with the Management team and be a key stakeholder in the business.
